Story State and Causality

Active research: Story State, Causal View, and State Space are active areas of product research and development at Saganode. This page explains the direction we are exploring, not a promise that every capability described here is currently available.

A story changes when its state changes

Characters do not merely appear in scenes; they learn, lose trust, make commitments, and gain or lose options. Events change what is true, what is known, and what can plausibly happen next.

Saganode is actively researching how connected narrative state can become easier to inspect. Alongside the Explorer graph, the Causal View and State Space directions explore ways for creators to look beyond a list of notes and ask how a decision changes the system around it.

Causal View: see why a moment matters

Causal View explores how a creator might understand the relationship between an event and its consequences. It helps frame questions such as:

  • What led to this decision?
  • Which character, relationship, or piece of lore does it change?
  • What later scene relies on this being true?
  • Where could a revision create a contradiction?

The aim is not to dictate one plot. It is to make the dependencies in a chosen story legible enough for a creator to assess them.

State Space: distinguish what is true now

State Space explores ways to focus attention on the current conditions of the world: canon, provisional material, open questions, and the situation that a character or scene inherits. That distinction could make it easier to separate a visual reference from an approved version, a possible idea from an established fact, or a past relationship from its current state.

This distinction matters in production. A visually consistent asset can still be wrong if it depicts a character before a revelation, an object before it was acquired, or a relationship as unchanged after a decisive event.

Review change before it spreads

The research direction is to let creators use connected views to locate the elements and scenes that a new event, relationship, or version may affect. The human decision remains central: update the canon, preserve an alternative, or keep the material explicitly exploratory.

That review step helps a large narrative world remain flexible without allowing every new output to silently rewrite the story.
